I love purses, so for my first post I thought I would start by talking about what kind of purse to carry at a comic book convention. Really, this can apply to any convention that you intend to buy a lot of stuff, so it doesn’t have to be just comic books. Of course, there’s the basics of matching your outfit. Making sure you carry it so the cleanest side faces out is important, and let’s not forget the dream of just having your purse be so stunning all the girls are jelly and now wish they were you. I want to talk about something more important those those points, though. Feasibility.
If I take a large bag to a Con I know that I’ll be carrying my stuff as well as my friends stuff. I will have to carry waters because we know they'll be over priced inside the Con, and snacks in case people get hungry (even though when they do get hungry they decide it’s just time to go eat anyway!). This is not including all of my own personal stuff. I carry way too much usually, making my bag over-packed, even in the case of an emergency. In the end, I do like having the comfort of knowing everything I need is right there and ready for me.
If I take a small bag to Con, I don’t have any of these responsibilities, but I always wish I did. I do have the bonus of being able to move around the floor with a lot more ease, and I always have the privilege of being able to take my purse off and put it back on without the fear of decapitating someone. Truthfully, when I get to the car at the end of the day my back is always happy that I took the small bag.
No matter which size you chose you will still have the issue of overfilling it. You will either stuff it with things you’ll initially bring with you or things you’ve bought and need to get home in one piece. This means you need a bag with strong straps. Trust me, this is from experience: you don’t want your strap breaking on you in the middle of the Con! This will force you to either buy a new one (instead of buying something you actually wanted) or it will force you to Macguyver your sad-bag in hopes that it’ll last until you can replace it with something new. In the end it’s not a situation you want to be in.
Lastly, remember that it doesn’t hurt to carry a “backup bag” in your purse. Usually, I bring one of those reusable bags from the market or the free ones I’ve gotten at past Cons. Not every booth you buy from will have a bag, so plan ahead! This way, you’re already prepared, AND you’re doing it in style. If that doesn’t work, try and find the booth giving away free bags. They get some good advertising and you get a little help with carrying all of your belongings.
The purse/bag you carry will have a big impact on your con experience, so be sure to think it through. Weigh out your pros and cons. Heck, weigh out the bag! Double check that you have everything you need, but nothing more. Make sure the purse is up for the job no matter what size it is. Most importantly, carry it with pride. Or better yet…find someone to carry it for you!
That’s it for this week. Good Luck, and Keep It Geeky!
