It is truly remarkable to be able to experience anything in this world without any previous knowledge. Whether it is from learning about the subject in school, an obsession of your own, or just accidentally stumbling across it on the Internet. Experiencing anything for the first time with a clean pallet is becoming more difficult these days.
How I seem to experience anything without being spoiled is amazing.
It’s starting to make me feel like I keep running into The Silence whenever I experience a spoiler because I have no recollection of hearing any spoilers of popular TV shows that I have never seen until recently.
Of course, there are cases for when I have experienced a spoiler the minute Im about to watch a movie on opening day. My brother called to tell me Wedding Crashers was amazing and that Will Ferrell had an amazing cameo. A spoiler not big enough to ruin the movie, but enough to have me sigh in sadness when everyone freaked at the screen and I sat there continually eating my popcorn like it was no big deal.
Then there are other times when I don’t hear anything about what everyone is talking about. How this happens I do not know, but I have had a tendency to experience TV shows, video games, and even movies after everyone has already experienced these moments numerous times. In some cases, enough time was able to go by that the reruns were being played on UPN. You could even find the movie in the five-dollar section at Target or my personal favorite moment; multiple sequels and even a reboot/remake occurring before I know anything about it.
This may sound far-fetched and impossible, but I swear to you that I am not making this up. It wasn’t until 2012 that I had even heard of Doctor Who and I didn’t even watch the show until 2013. In 2014 I started watching Game of Thrones knowing only that my family and Jason loved this show. Oh and a dude with one hand jumps into a ring with a bear to save a woman.
Little did I know that the show is actually a black hole that consumes your life and takes away everyone that you care about on the show. Then gives you new favorites who die off as well. Leaving you wondering why you keep putting yourself through this whole ordeal while counting down the days to the next episode.
Another show that I experienced recently that I knew nothing outside of the show was a comedy and it had Steve Carell in it was, you guessed it, The Office.
This was the type of place I needed to be after experiencing the heartache of events in Game of Thrones like the Red Wedding, but it meant that my humor was suddenly thrust back into 2005. Jokes like, “That’s what she said” made sense all of a sudden, and of course the joy of Jim pranking Dwight. The one thing that is super sad is that when Pam and Jim got together I wanted to talk to everyone about it, but no one cared. It was like running around saying that Marvel was making movies.
All the support that I received was either judging glares for not knowing this or the simplest forms of communication. A one-syllable word said with zero effort, “Duh.”
Once I cleared my head from all the sadness from Game of Thrones I went back into the world of HBOGO and I discovered the world of a famous celebrity who went by the name of Vincent Chase and I followed him and his entourage around.
This show had everything that I was looking for. It had a serious tone mixed with comedy and it was smart enough to make me think. The character development in that show was so amazing! There was not one throwaway character and I loved that. At the end of the ninth season when the series finale came on I was afraid that it was going to be another How I Met Your Mother moment where it didn’t feel like a series finale and took away every character development in a real way OR how Newsroom did it by solving the current issue, but not end the show. If anything I am still half expecting Newsroom to have a new season soon.
Luckily for me, Entourage did not have that type of ending. In the final 28 minutes of this show main characters redeemed themselves, couples got back together, and it left a very great period for the show as they flew off into the sunset.
There are a lot of things that are out there that I still have never watched or read. I intend to watch or read something new and write about these experiences. If you want to recommend anything for me to read or watch that you don’t think I have ever seen you can always message me at Geek Say What on our Facebook page or leave a comment underneath this article.
